About Me

My Story

My name is Elmer Porter, and I am running for the Nevada Board of Regents, District 8 position.

For the past 38 years, I have worked and served in various educational positions throughout Nevada as a teacher, School District Technology Director, high school coach and athletic director. I have served on numerous Nevada State Educational Technology committees, athletic committees, county housing boards, and recreation/tourism boards. I was appointed by Governor Gibbons to serve on the Nevada Broadband Taskforce which initiated statewide wireless and fiber optic connections to several schools and school districts throughout Nevada. Over the past several years I have been a volunteer fireman and Lions Club member. I have worked closely with Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) programs and personnel to connect educational facilities utilizing the latest technology. I have devoted my adult life to serve Nevada, particularly Nevada’s youth.

Thirty-eight years ago, I started my teaching career in McDermitt, Nevada where I learned quickly that remote adult education was essential for rural communities. I taught several classes through what was named Northern Nevada Community College, which of course is now Great Basin College. My entire life I have lived and worked in small communities and have a deep sense of loyalty to the community college system. I believe that the community college system is a great but underserved educational resource for the youth and adults in Nevada. Nevada needs to elect leaders who have vision, purpose, advocate, along with a dedicated Board of Regents that fully understands the current mission and future capabilities of the region each school represents.

I believe, the University and Community College System has lost focus in some ways and can do a better job providing quality programs and educating students attending Nevada State institutions. You can rest assured, that I will work tirelessly to represent and promote GBC, Elko, and the region it serves and expand on the possibilities that exist in the future. I will listen, advise, praise, and hold people accountable for their actions.

I ask for your help by voting for Elmer Porter, Nevada Board of Regents, District 8. I have the experience, dedication, and knowledge to help Nevada’s University and Community College System progress and steadily strive to be their best.

Pass the word on to friends, neighbors, and family to vote for Elmer during early voting dates and on the Primary Election date, Flag Day, June 14, 2022.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out, anytime.

Note: District 8 serves Elko, Eureka, Humboldt, Lincoln, Nye, White Pine, and a portion of Clark counties.

I look forward to meeting you. Elmer
